An infection of the tissues that support your teeth is known as periodontal (or gum) disease. Poor brushing and flossing practices frequently contribute to it by allowing plaque, a sticky film of germs, to accumulate on the teeth and harden. Swollen, bloodshot, and bleeding gums are the first sign. Chewing may become painful if it spreads to the bones near the gums if untreated. In the worst scenarios, teeth might become loose or require extraction. Unremoved dental plaque can solidify into tartar, and tartar buildup can result in gum disease. Tartar can only be removed by a dentist or dental hygienist during a professional cleaning.Smoking is the biggest risk factor for gum disease out of all the others. Smoking can also reduce the effectiveness of gum disease treatments. Genetics, specific diseases like diabetes or AIDS, and their treatments, as well as hormonal changes in girls and women, are additional risk factors.
