The tissues that encircle and stabilize your teeth are called gums. An infection of this tissue is gum disease. It may be referred to as periodontitis or periodontal disease by your dentist. In your mouth, bacteria develop and cause gum disease. When you don't floss or clean your teeth thoroughly, bacteria accumulate. Gum disease can result in pain, swelling, redness, and tooth loss if left untreated. Gum disease is present in about half of persons over 30. Adults with severe gum disease had a 9% incidence. Swelling, redness, and bleeding in the area of your gums that surrounds your teeth are symptoms of gingivitis. If left untreated, this milder kind of gum disease can develop into periodontitis. Around your teeth, a sticky film known as plaque forms from food particles and germs when you neglect to brush, floss, and rinse with mouthwash. The muck releases acids that eat away at the enamel, the layer covering your teeth, and lead to decay. Plaque turns into tartar after 72 hours, which accumulates around the gum line and makes it difficult to thoroughly clean your teeth and gums. Gingivitis develops when this accumulation irritates and inflames your gums over time.
